Catch-22 (post one)

"There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own sagety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a ration mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he dad to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of the clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle."

This quote in chapter 5 is where the book got its name. The quote says if a pilot says he is insane and cannot fly, he is actually sane the therefore must fly more missions. The book so far has been filled with funny situations just like this one. The main character, Yossarian, spends all of his time checking in and out of the hospital trying to avoid flying in World War II. The book began with him in the hospital saying that his liver hurt. The doctors all though it was jaundice but couldn't treat him until it became more severe, and couldn't release him until the pain went away. So far the author has given me a pretty negative look at the superior officers by making them all stupid. All these officers do is bark orders and shoot skeet for their self awarded recreation time. This book has been very funny thus far and I cannot wait to read more.

I started to read this book and I think I got to about chapter three and then I stopped because I did not have time. I would have to agree with you about how the author makes all the officers look bad. In other books like this one the authors tend to do the same thing. In the military (like in movies or books) they always make it look like the people in charge don't care because they yell out orders and are really mean but they are just trying to get them ready for everything. In this book I like the way the author plays out all the characters and how every character is unique from the others.
