“That’s when Tinewood felt the hard pok of force against his pelvis. He was rolling. Rolling… the pavement changed color under him, white, then red. His brain registered excitement at all that sudden brightness and splashy change, like a scene from Devan’s favorite video game, the one he always played with that goofy best friend of his with the rattail, the champ of the fourth grade. Special effects. Computer blood. Wasn’t it?” (4).
First off I want to say this is my kind of book. It doesn’t waste time building up the moment, it just throws you right into the action. It hooked me at the first line so I had to keep reading.
I like this quote because it shows how the intensity has already escalated by page four. The entire first chapter was just one action packed event after another. It made me think about all the students who don’t like to read. They just haven’t found the right book yet. The quote shows how the book replaces the building up of characters with action and adventure.
I also like this quote because it’s an introduction to real life. A lot of people play videogames with killing and violence but never really know how these things would go in real life. As Tinewood is shot, he recalls his son’s videogame and how everything seems the same, but really, it’s his blood on the pavement. Furthermore, the description is graphic and easy to relate to. Words like “brightness” and “splashy” create a vivid image in my mind while I relate to the videogames I have played in the past, creating another image.

Wow, this book sounds really interesting to me. Like you, I also like books that really describe things in detail. I also think that it is pretty cool how the author doesn’t even try to build up suspense because some books take way too long doing that. I would really like to read this book.
