“Grandma had placed little sachet pillows in the dresser drawers. As I yanked each drawer open, the smell of old ladies from church—with their powdered wrinkly necks and quivery singing voices—drifted up toward me” (38).
When I read this quote, I had a smile on my face and knew exactly what the main character, Dolores was feeling. Everyone knows that “old lady” smell, and I think that the author really did a great job showing not telling. I really liked this quote and it reminded me of my grandmas house, and how when I open a drawer to get out a blanket and a pillow case, I spell that Granny smell in my grandmothers house as well.
The book so far as shown a lot. I am on page 72, and I enjoy reading it. Dolores’ mom was a stay at home mom and her dad worked for Mrs. Masicotte- a rich lady. Dolores’ mother says that she’s an old whore and basically her dad “works” for her if you know what I mean. Dolores’ dad puts in a pool for her, and then Dolores finds out that her Daddy is leaving her and her mother for some other lady that lives in New Jersey. Dolores’ mother undergoes tons of stress and goes to a mental hospital and Dolores must go and live with her grandma for a while. Dolores and her grandma do not get along very much but at least she has her T.V. which is probably the biggest and most important thing to Dolores. She must go to a new school since she lives with her grandma even when her mother comes back and lives with them. When her mother does come back, she eventually starts dating again and has a new job and everything seems to be going well at this time…

Good quote! You're spot on when you say that the author has done an excellent job of showing rather than just telling. You'll have to let me know if the rest of the book is written as descriptively.
Wow. I love that quote! That is so sad about her dad leaving them for another woman. And about her mom. I think that what makes it so sad is the fact that it happens so much in our society nowadays and its a horrible reality. But anyways, it sounds like its going to ba a really great book so far.
