“Worse, the sheets of rain degraded our night vision goggles and left us blind to what was going on around the warehouses, although we could hear people shouting and motors turning over. The Skinnies were making mischief” (5)
I think that this quote depicts the extreme loneliness and emptiness of a war. The description of the rain blinding their view shows the dark and coldness of wars. All they can hear are shouting and military vehicles being destroyed. If that were me the only thing I would be thinking about would be my fellow soldiers. I would be afraid to be left alone out in the rain and darkness all by myself. I would be worried about the skinnies or the enemy sneaking up behind me with no one to protect me. Also to be a sniper you must remain focused at all times. I would find it very hard to focus with no clue where the enemy is and no back up to support me. I think this quote adds to the overall theme of the emptiness of war. Snipers are usually one to two man operations and when you are by yourself it is hard to cope with the violence and need of survival in war. The emptiness the sniper feels is similar to the cold hearted killing of war.

I think that this would be a very scary situation. I could not imagine being blinded on a battlefield, and all I could hear were shouts of the enemy. I think it would be very hard to concentrate on the task to be done, when all your brain would think about is survival.
