This quote also says a lot about the town of Odessa and the Permian football program. The previous year coach Gaines didnt have a very successful season and te town wanted to get a new coach. They dont except failure. If the team doesnt make it far into the playoffs then they think of it as a failure. The town wont put up with it.
But they also dont want to blame the players for some reason. Even though it was them that lost the game they go straight to blaming the coach for the loss. Thinking that he was too nice and didnt push them hard enough. I guess they dont want to hurt the kids feelings or make them think more about it then they already do and then the upcoming week do worse then they did that week. They would go through all of the trouble to get a new coach in the middle of the season then to admit that the kids lost the game on their own.
