One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Post #2)

“After McMurphy doesn’t stand up for us any longer, some of the Acutes talk and say he’s still outsmarting the Big Nurse, say that he got word she was about to send him to Disturbed and decided to toe the line a while, not give her any reason. Others figure he’s letting her relax, then he’s going to spring something new on her, something wilder and more ornery than ever. You can hear them talking in groups, wondering.”

At this point in the book I don’t know what to think. I can’t decide if I want to agree with the Acutes and believe that McMurphy is just planning something big. Or if he is trying to let the Nurse cool down for a while so he doesn’t have to go to the disturbed ward. Or has McMurphy finally given up. For some reason I want to believe that McMurphy is just letting the Nurse cool down and will soon start making her life miserable again, but the more I read the less likely this seems. Perhaps later in the book something will trigger McMurphy, and he’ll get back to giving the staff a hard time. However even this is starting to seem unlikely too. In the book one of McMurphy’s friends that stuck by his side drown in the swimming pool. After this event McMurphy still doesn’t resume his normal activity. Surely if he was planning some great scheme he would have done it after the death of his sidekick, but maybe there is no plan and McMurphy has given up. Although I don’t want to believe it there is no other explanation. I’m interested to see what the author is planning to do, and I hope that McMurphy doesn’t give up.
