“The minute he was in my reach I grabbed him by the hair with my right hand and pulled his face down nice and low. At the same time I took the gun out of my left pocket and I started to smack him across the face. He screamed, “He’s got a gun! He’s got a gun!” I can feel his face go. I shoved the gun inside his mouth and moved it around like a dinner gong. The brothers are so scared they can’t move. Fu**s.”(73)
Henry Hill since the age of twelve had been involved with the Sicilian mafia under Paul Vario. Although only half Sicilian, Hill proves to be dedicated to the life of hustling and crime, even above some of the family’s own children. This quote is from when a guy from Karen’s (Hill’s girlfriend) street tries to make a move on her, but she refuses and Steve kicks her out of the car. Enraged Henry goes over to this guys house to make an impression to back off or else.
“I swear I would have shot them if they came towards me. Somebody from inside the house said they called the cops. Before the cops arrived I gave Steve a few more belts. I think that when he yelled about the gun it stopped me from killing him. I gave him another couple of smacks in the head and left him crying in the driveway. He had pissed all over himself.” (Continuation of above quote)
So far this has been the most interesting book I have ever read. The mafia has always intrigued me because it’s a lifestyle none of us will ever witness, but from all that so far has occurred in Wise Guy. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak; arson, extortion, hijacking, and murder were just a part of everyday life.
Setting Wise Guy down has been relatively hard because eventually it is going to get to the biggest successful cash robbery in U.S. history: The Lufthansa heist for over six million dollars. So there is something to look forward to I guess.
